About the Rwandan Embassy in Berlin
The Rwandan Embassy in Berlin represents the Republic of Rwanda in Germany and supports bilateral relations between Rwanda and Germany. Its work includes political dialogue, economic cooperation, development relations, cultural exchange and consular affairs.
Germany and Rwanda maintain wide-ranging relations. Cooperation includes sustainable economic development, vocational training, climate and energy, health and digitalisation.
The bilateral relationship also includes longstanding regional and civil-society links, including the partnership between Rwanda and the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Visa Information
Rwandan citizens require a visa to travel to Germany. Short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period normally require a Schengen visa. Longer stays for purposes such as employment, study, vocational training or family reunification require the appropriate German national visa.
An important procedural change applies to Schengen visa applications from Rwanda. Since 1 August 2025, Schengen visa applications are no longer processed in Kigali. Rwandan citizens apply through TLScontact in Nairobi, where applications are handled under the representation arrangement with the Belgian Embassy.
The German Embassy in Kigali remains responsible for German national visas for applicants residing in Rwanda.
German citizens require a visa to enter Rwanda, but no application before departure is normally necessary. German passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport or an official land border.
A single-entry visa is currently available for stays of up to 30 days. Travellers may alternatively apply online before departure through Rwanda's official immigration system.

Many services are now initiated through the Irembo online platform. This includes e-passport applications, emergency travel documents, powers of attorney and several document-authentication procedures.
E-passport applicants complete the application online first and are subsequently asked to attend the embassy for biometric enrolment, including fingerprints, signature and a biometric photograph.
Appointments
The Rwandan Embassy in Berlin does not use one general appointment procedure for every consular service. Instead, many applications begin online through Irembo.
For e-passports, applicants first submit the online application and then contact the embassy after receiving the request for biometric enrolment. The embassy asks applicants to provide preferred dates and times for the personal appointment.
Other procedures, including powers of attorney and certain legalisation services, can also begin online and may result in a personal embassy appointment after the submitted documents have been reviewed.
Applicants should therefore follow the instructions for their specific consular procedure rather than visiting the embassy without first completing any required online steps.
Diplomatic Missions between Rwanda and Germany
Rwanda's principal diplomatic representation in Germany is the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Berlin.
Rwanda additionally maintains Honorary Consuls in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Magdeburg and Tutzing. These honorary representations serve defined regional districts and provide a more limited range of services than the Embassy in Berlin.
Germany is represented in Rwanda by the German Embassy in Kigali. Its diplomatic district covers the entire Republic of Rwanda.
The German Embassy in Kigali provides national visa services and selected consular services. However, Schengen visa applications are currently handled outside Rwanda under the arrangement introduced in August 2025.
