Renewing a U.S. passport abroad

  • The passport must be in your current name – otherwise bring the marriage certificate, divorce decree or other name-change document
  • If you do not qualify (e.g. lost or stolen passport, or issued more than 15 years ago) you must apply in person
  • Abroad you pay only the passport fee (book: $130) – no expedite fee

Do Italian citizens need a visa for the United States?

Closing days

Like most offices in Italy, the consular agency closes on public holidays; US celebrations on 4 July (national day) usually mean a closure too. Offices in the city also close on 25 April for the feast of Saint Mark. If your visit falls close to a holiday, confirm by phone or e-mail.

Emergency assistance

In an emergency, US citizens should contact the consular agency or the embassy. Typical emergencies are a lost passport before a flight, a hospital stay or an arrest; costs remain with the person concerned. In Italy, the general emergency number is 112.
