What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by North Macedonia and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Macedonian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
Closing days
The honorary consulate is normally closed on the public holidays observed in Slovenia – New Year (1 and 2 January), Prešeren Day – the Slovenian Cultural Holiday (8 February), Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, Day of Uprising Against Occupation (27 April), Labour Day (1 and 2 May), Whit Sunday, Statehood Day (25 June), Assumption Day (15 August), Reformation Day (31 October), Remembrance Day (1 November), Christmas (25 December) and Independence and Unity Day (26 December). Slovenia does not move holidays that fall on a weekend; Easter follows the Western calendar. It is usually also closed on North Macedonia’s national day (2 August).
