What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Bosnia and Herzegovina and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Bosnian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
Closing days
The honorary consulate is normally closed on the public holidays observed in Romania – New Year (1 and 2 January), Epiphany (6 January), the Feast of St John the Baptist (7 January), the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities (24 January), Orthodox Good Friday, Orthodox Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, Labour Day (1 May), Children’s Day (1 June), Orthodox Whit Sunday and Whit Monday, the Dormition of the Mother of God (15 August), St Andrew’s Day (30 November), Romania’s National Day (1 December) and Christmas (25 and 26 December). Easter and Whitsun follow the Orthodox calendar (in 2027: Good Friday 30 April, Easter Monday 3 May, Whit Monday 21 June). It is usually also closed on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national day (25 November).
