Documents checklist
What Bulgarian citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official Bulgarian government information:
Bulgarian passport (application abroad)
- Apply in person at a Bulgarian embassy or consulate – signature, photo and fingerprints are taken there (posts without the equipment do not accept applications)
- Your old passport, which is handed in for destruction before the new one is issued
- If lost or stolen: a police document certifying the loss (notify the consular service within 3 days)
- Minors: both parents sign in front of the consular official with the child’s Bulgarian birth certificate (with personal number), or a notarised power of attorney from the absent parent
- Foreign documents need an apostille or legalisation
- Without any valid document: a temporary passport (valid up to 12 months) can be issued

Closing days
Expect the embassy to be closed on Croatian public holidays such as Epiphany (6 January), Easter Monday, Statehood Day (30 May), Corpus Christi, Anti-Fascist Struggle Day (22 June) and Victory Day (5 August). On the Bulgarian national day (3 March) the office is usually closed or holds a reception.

In Croatia, the emergency number is 112 (police 192, ambulance 194). Croatian citizens who need help in Bulgaria can contact the Croatian Embassy in Sofia or the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs in Zagreb on +385 1 4569 964.
