What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by France and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help French citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
Closing days
The honorary consulate is normally closed on the public holidays observed in Cyprus – 1 January, Epiphany (6 January), Green Monday, Greek Independence Day (25 March), Cyprus National Day (1 April), Orthodox Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, Kataklysmos (Whit Monday), the Assumption (15 August), Cyprus Independence Day (1 October), Ochi Day (28 October) and Christmas (25 and 26 December); Easter and the related holidays follow the Orthodox calendar. It is usually also closed on France’s national day (14 July).
