About the Embassy of Germany in Ukraine
The ambassador is Boris Ruge, according to the directory of foreign diplomatic missions published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (October 2026), which gives 18 August 2026 as the date credentials were presented. The directory also lists the German Consulate General in Donetsk with an office in Dnipro (website donezk.diplo.de, e-mail info@kiew.diplo.de), without a street address; the embassy’s website describes the consulate general as currently closed. The office is in the capital, Kyiv, about 29 km in a straight line from Boryspil International Airport. Ukraine’s airspace remains closed to civil flights, according to GOV.UK travel advice (October 2026).
Do German citizens need a visa for Ukraine?
Holders of ordinary German passports do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period in Ukraine, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine’s entry-regime table (as of 8 June 2023). Ukraine is not part of the Schengen area and applies its own visa rules.
Documents checklist
Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official German sources:
German passport (application abroad)
- Apply at the German mission for your place of residence – some embassies and consulates do not handle passports, so check its website first
- Personal appearance is required: fingerprints are taken, so postal applications and proxies are not possible
- Biometric passport photos that meet the official requirements
- Application form, fee and appointment booking: see the website of the responsible mission
- Some honorary consuls accept passport applications and forward them for an extra fee
Lost passport – travel document for the return trip
- The consular section can issue a Reiseausweis als Passersatz (passport substitute) for the return to Germany
- It is valid for at most one month
