The embassy and its network in France

According to the embassy, it is headed by Hans-Dieter Lucas, Ambassador. According to the French Foreign Ministry, about 86,751 German nationals live in France. In the other direction, about 93,750 French citizens are registered with the French consular network in Germany. Besides the embassy, Germany has career consular offices in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Paris and Strasbourg. 18 honorary consulates support German citizens in other parts of France.

Documents checklist

Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official German sources:

German passport (application abroad)

  • Apply at the German mission for your place of residence – some embassies and consulates do not handle passports, so check its website first
  • Personal appearance is required: fingerprints are taken, so postal applications and proxies are not possible
  • Biometric passport photos that meet the official requirements
  • Application form, fee and appointment booking: see the website of the responsible mission
  • Some honorary consuls accept passport applications and forward them for an extra fee

Lost passport – travel document for the return trip

  • The consular section can issue a Reiseausweis als Passersatz (passport substitute) for the return to Germany
  • It is valid for at most one month

Visa and entry information for French citizens

As EU citizens, French nationals can travel to Germany without a visa; a valid passport or national identity card is enough. For Germany, French travel advice currently asks for normal vigilance. Details: French travel advice (Conseils aux voyageurs).

Closing days

Expect the embassy to be closed on French public holidays and on the German national holiday (3 October). If your visit falls close to a holiday, confirm by phone.

Emergency assistance

German nationals in urgent need of help can reach the embassy on +33 1 53 83 45 00. Embassies can issue emergency travel documents, contact relatives and provide lists of lawyers or doctors; they cannot pay bills or act as a lawyer. French citizens who need help in Germany contact the French Embassy in Berlin.
