About the honorary consulate in Sofia
Bulgarian citizens need a visa for Ghana, to be obtained before travelling, according to the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. See the ministry’s visa table for Bulgarian citizens (in Bulgarian).
Which Ghanaian office issues passports and visas?
An honorary consul cannot issue passports or visas; these are handled by the Ghanaian Embassy in Ankara (accredited to Bulgaria).
Note: Ghana has no resident embassy in Sofia; its embassy in Ankara is accredited to Bulgaria.
What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Ghana and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Ghanaian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
