What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Hungary and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Hungarian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
Closing days
Under Law No. 2429, Türkiye’s public holidays are 1 January, 23 April, 1 May, 19 May, 15 July, 30 August and Republic Day on 29 October (from 13:00 on 28 October), plus the Ramadan Feast and the Feast of the Sacrifice, whose dates move each year; in 2027 they fall on 9–11 March and 16–19 May, each starting at 13:00 the day before, according to the Presidency of Religious Affairs. Holidays that fall on a weekend are not moved to a working day. The honorary consulate may also close on days set by its own government.
