Who runs the Hungarian Embassy?
The embassy is currently led by Balázs Dobri as chargé d’affaires a.i., according to the Polish Foreign Ministry’s list of foreign missions (September 2026). Hungary also has career consulates in Gdansk, Krakow and Wroclaw. Six honorary consulates – in Bydgoszcz, Kielce, Lodz, Lublin, Poznan and Rzeszow – support Hungarian citizens outside the capital.
Consular services
The consular section typically handles:
- Hungarian passports and emergency travel documents
- Registration of births, marriages and deaths
- Certification and legalisation of documents
- Citizenship and civil register matters
- Help for citizens in difficulty – illness, arrest or loss of documents
Depending on where you live, consular matters may also be handled by the consulate general in Krakow, the consulate general in Gdansk and the vice consulate in Wroclaw.
Documents checklist
The most frequent applications and the documents the Hungarian authorities ask for:
Hungarian passport (application abroad)
- Apply in person with an appointment – fingerprints and photo are taken at the consulate
- Proof of Hungarian citizenship: valid ID card or passport, a passport expired within the last year, or a recent citizenship certificate
- Any previous passport and your Hungarian address card (lakcímkártya), if you have one
- Without a valid Hungarian document: photo ID such as a foreign passport or driving licence
- Births, marriages or name changes abroad must first be registered in Hungary
- Consular fee; the passport is produced in Hungary (usually 3–6 weeks)
Sources: Embassy of Hungary – passport application (mfa.gov.hu) (checked October 2026). Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, for most services, according to the official website.
Closing days
Like most offices in Poland, the embassy closes on public holidays – including Easter Monday, Corpus Christi and All Saints’ Day (1 November) as well as on the Hungarian national day, 20 August. Check before visiting in the weeks around Christmas and Easter.
Emergency assistance
For emergencies, the embassy’s number is +48 22 628 44 51. Embassies can issue emergency travel documents, contact relatives and provide lists of lawyers or doctors; they cannot pay bills or act as a lawyer. In Poland, the emergency number is 112. Polish citizens who need help in Hungary should contact the Polish embassy or consulate responsible for the country; the Polish Foreign Ministry’s Odyseusz service lists the contacts and lets travellers register their trip.
