Who runs the Spanish Embassy?

According to the Belgian protocol list, Spain is represented by Ambassador Jose Maria Rodriguez Coso (credentials presented 1 July 2025). This is the bilateral embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium; missions to the European Union or NATO in Brussels are separate offices. Four honorary consulates support Spanish citizens in other parts of Belgium.

Documents checklist

The most frequent applications and the documents the Spanish authorities ask for:

Spanish passport (application abroad)

  • Registration in the consular register (Registro de Matrícula Consular) of the consulate where you live
  • Personal appearance with an appointment – applications cannot be made by post or through agencies
  • Your previous passport, even if expired or damaged
  • Your DNI, if you have one
  • A recent passport photo
  • A literal birth certificate (issued for the passport, less than 6 months old) if you have neither DNI nor passport or both expired more than 3 years ago

Do I need an appointment?

Walk-in capacity is limited, so check the procedure on the embassy website first.

Closing days

Expect the embassy to be closed on Belgian holidays such as 21 July (National Day), 15 August and 11 November as well as on the Spanish national day, 12 October. Many offices work reduced hours in summer – call ahead in July and August.

Emergency assistance

For emergencies, the embassy’s number is +32 2 230 03 40. Consular staff can replace lost travel documents and inform family members; they do not provide legal representation or money. The Belgian emergency number is 112 (police: 101). Belgian citizens who need help in Spain contact the Belgian Embassy in Madrid.
