What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Switzerland and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Swiss citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
Closing days
The honorary consulate is normally closed on the public holidays observed in Norway – New Year’s Day (1 January), Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, Labour Day (1 May), Constitution Day (17 May), Ascension Day, Whit Sunday and Whit Monday, and Christmas (25 and 26 December). In 2027 the Easter holidays fall on 25–29 March, Ascension Day on 6 May and Whit Monday on 17 May (together with Constitution Day). Christmas Eve (24 December) and New Year’s Eve (31 December) are not public holidays, but most offices close early or for the whole day.
