Documents checklist
The most frequent applications and the documents the US authorities ask for:
Renewing a U.S. passport abroad
- Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate for your area for its submission instructions
- Renewal with Form DS-82 is possible only if your last passport was issued within the last 15 years, when you were 16 or older, and has never been reported lost or stolen
- The passport must be in your current name – otherwise bring the marriage certificate, divorce decree or other name-change document
- If you do not qualify (e.g. lost or stolen passport, or issued more than 15 years ago) you must apply in person
- Abroad you pay only the passport fee (book: $130) – no expedite fee
