Consular services
What you can usually arrange here:
- US passports and emergency travel documents
- Certification and legalisation of documents
- Powers of attorney and notarial acts
- Help for citizens in difficulty – illness, arrest or loss of documents
Depending on where you live, consular matters may also be handled by the consulate general in Krakow.
Documents checklist
The most frequent applications and the documents the US authorities ask for:
Renewing a U.S. passport abroad
- Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate for your area for its submission instructions
- Renewal with Form DS-82 is possible only if your last passport was issued within the last 15 years, when you were 16 or older, and has never been reported lost or stolen
- The passport must be in your current name – otherwise bring the marriage certificate, divorce decree or other name-change document
- If you do not qualify (e.g. lost or stolen passport, or issued more than 15 years ago) you must apply in person
- Abroad you pay only the passport fee (book: $130) – no expedite fee

Travelling from Poland to the United States
Polish citizens do not need a visa for short stays in the United States (up to 90 days), but must obtain an electronic travel authorisation or register online before departure. Details: Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs – travel advice (in Polish).
Closing days
The embassy is normally closed on Polish public holidays; the US national day (4 July) usually means a closure too. Many missions also close on their own national and religious holidays – call ahead.
Emergency assistance
US nationals in urgent need of help can reach the embassy on +48 22 504 20 00. The embassy can help with lost passports, arrests and serious accidents, but it cannot cover costs or interfere with Polish authorities. In Poland, the emergency number is 112. Polish citizens who need help in the United States should contact the Polish embassy or consulate responsible for the country; the Polish Foreign Ministry’s Odyseusz service lists the contacts and lets travellers register their trip.
