What can an honorary consul do?

An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Slovenia and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Slovenian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.

Closing days

North Macedonia has eleven public holidays for all citizens, among them Orthodox Christmas (7 January), the first day of Ramadan Bayram, Orthodox Easter Monday, Ilinden (2 August) and Independence Day (8 September); when one falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is off. The honorary consulate may also close on Slovenia’s national day (25 June).

Emergency assistance

In North Macedonia, dial 192 for the police, 194 for an ambulance and 193 for the fire brigade (Government of Canada travel information).
