Documents checklist

Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official US sources:

Renewing a U.S. passport abroad

  • Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate for your area for its submission instructions
  • Renewal with Form DS-82 is possible only if your last passport was issued within the last 15 years, when you were 16 or older, and has never been reported lost or stolen
  • The passport must be in your current name – otherwise bring the marriage certificate, divorce decree or other name-change document
  • If you do not qualify (e.g. lost or stolen passport, or issued more than 15 years ago) you must apply in person
  • Abroad you pay only the passport fee (book: $130) – no expedite fee

Sources: U.S. Department of State – renew your passport, U.S. Department of State – where to apply (checked October 2026). Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.

Do I need an appointment?

Ask in advance whether your service needs a booked slot.

Do Danish citizens need a visa for the United States?

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not publish visa rules for individual countries. Its travel advice points out that the authorities of the destination decide on entry rules, and asks Danish citizens to check with that country’s nearest embassy or consulate before departure – for the United States, that means this mission. See the ministry’s travel advice for the United States (in Danish).

Closing days

Expect the embassy to be closed on Danish public holidays such as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Monday and Constitution Day (5 June). It is usually also closed on the United States’ national day (4 July). If your visit falls close to a holiday, confirm by phone or e-mail.

Emergency assistance

In an emergency, US citizens should call the embassy on +45 33 41 71 00. Consular staff can replace lost travel documents and inform family members; they do not provide legal representation or money. In Denmark, the emergency number is 112; the police can be reached on 114 for non-urgent matters. Danish citizens who need help in the United States can contact the Danish embassy accredited to the country or the Danish Foreign Ministry’s 24-hour Global Watch Centre on +45 33 92 11 12.
