Do Bangladeshi citizens need a visa for the United States?
Bangladesh is not one of the 42 countries in the US Visa Waiver Program (Department of Homeland Security), so Bangladeshi citizens normally need a US visa before travelling to the United States, also for short visits; visas are issued by US embassies and consulates abroad, not by the Bangladeshi embassy in the United States.
Documents checklist
What Bangladeshi citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official Bangladeshi government information:
Bangladesh e-passport (application abroad)
- Apply online on the e-passport portal (epassport.gov.bd) and print the confirmation page showing “Application Submitted”
- Book an appointment and attend in person for biometric enrolment (fingerprints, iris scan, photo, signature)
- Bangladeshi national ID card (NID) or a 17-digit online birth registration certificate (English version) – foreign or handwritten birth certificates are not accepted
- Proof of legal status in the United States (residence permit)
- Reissue: your current passport; lost passport: a police report (GD) with the passport number
- The passport is printed in Dhaka – processing can take several weeks
