What can an honorary consul do?

An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Belgium and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Belgian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.

Closing days

The honorary consulate is normally closed on the public holidays observed in Albania – 1 and 2 January, Summer Day (14 March), Nevruz (22 March), Catholic and Orthodox Easter, 1 May, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, Mother Teresa Day (5 September), Independence Day (28 November), Liberation Day (29 November), National Youth Day (8 December) and Christmas (25 December); holidays falling on a weekend are usually observed on the following Monday. It is usually also closed on Belgium’s national day (21 July).
