Who runs the Bulgarian Embassy?
The ambassador is Nataliya Evgenieva Uzunova, who presented credentials to the King of the Belgians on 4 December 2025. Two honorary consulates support Bulgarian citizens in other parts of Belgium.
Consular services
The consular section typically handles:
- Bulgarian passports and emergency travel documents
- Registration of births, marriages and deaths
- Certification and legalisation of documents
- Powers of attorney and notarial acts
- Certificates for pensions abroad
Documents checklist
Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official Bulgarian sources:
Bulgarian passport (application abroad)
- Apply in person at a Bulgarian embassy or consulate – signature, photo and fingerprints are taken there (posts without the equipment do not accept applications)
- Your old passport, which is handed in for destruction before the new one is issued
- If lost or stolen: a police document certifying the loss (notify the consular service within 3 days)
- Minors: both parents sign in front of the consular official with the child’s Bulgarian birth certificate (with personal number), or a notarised power of attorney from the absent parent
- Foreign documents need an apostille or legalisation
- Without any valid document: a temporary passport (valid up to 12 months) can be issued
Sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria – passport, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria – temporary passport (checked October 2026). Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.
Do I need an appointment?
Many consular services require an appointment – check the embassy website first.
Closing days
The embassy is closed on Belgian public holidays and on Bulgaria’s national day (3 March). Check before visiting in the weeks around Christmas, Easter and in July/August.
Emergency assistance
Bulgarian nationals in urgent need of help can reach the embassy on +32 2 374 47 88. Embassies can issue emergency travel documents, contact relatives and provide lists of lawyers or doctors; they cannot pay bills or act as a lawyer. The Belgian emergency number is 112 (police: 101).
