Who runs the Danish Embassy?

Christie Geisler Hansen heads the embassy as ambassador. Because The Hague hosts the Dutch government as well as the International Court of Justice and the OPCW, diplomatic work here often covers international law and organisations too. Two honorary consulates support Danish citizens in other parts of the Netherlands.

Consular services

The consular section typically handles:

  • Danish passports and emergency travel documents
  • Registration of births, marriages and deaths
  • Certification and legalisation of documents
  • Citizenship and civil register matters
  • Visas for travellers who need one for Denmark

Documents checklist

Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official Danish sources:

Danish passport (application abroad)

  • Book an appointment at a Danish embassy (consulates only handle children under 12 and emergency passports) and apply in person – photo, fingerprints and signature are taken
  • Signed application form, supporting documents and the passport fee
  • You must be registered as a Danish citizen in the CPR system
  • Renewal: your current passport; documentation of any name change (it must be registered in the CPR first)
  • First passport or last one expired more than 2 years ago: original birth certificate with both parents’ names and any certificate of Danish nationality
  • Documents not in Danish or English need an authorised translation

Sources: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark – how to apply for a Danish passport, Embassy of Denmark in London – passports for adults (checked October 2026). Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. According to the official website, visits are by appointment only.

Closing days

Expect the embassy to be closed on Dutch holidays such as King’s Day (27 April), Ascension Day and Whit Monday as well as on the Danish national day, 5 June. Many missions also close on their own national and religious holidays – call ahead.

Emergency assistance

For emergencies, the embassy’s number is +31 70 302 59 59. Consular staff can replace lost travel documents and inform family members; they do not provide legal representation or money. In the Netherlands, the emergency number is 112; for non-urgent police matters call 0900 8844. Dutch citizens who need help in Denmark can contact the Dutch Embassy in Copenhagen or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ 24/7 contact centre on +31 247 247 247.
