Do Salvadoran citizens need a visa for the United States?

El Salvador is not one of the 42 countries in the US Visa Waiver Program (Department of Homeland Security), so Salvadoran citizens normally need a US visa before travelling to the United States, also for short visits; visas are issued by US embassies and consulates abroad, not by the Salvadoran embassy in the United States.

Documents checklist

The most frequent applications and the documents the Salvadoran authorities ask for:

Renewing a Salvadoran ordinary passport abroad

  • Proof of payment – US$60 outside Central America
  • Lost or stolen passport: a sworn declaration at the consulate (extra fee)
  • Minors: the child’s passport, both parents with valid DUI or Salvadoran passport, or a special power of attorney from the absent parent
