The embassy and its network in the Netherlands

Mikael Kenneth Antell heads the embassy as ambassador. Unlike in most countries, the embassies in the Netherlands are not in the capital Amsterdam but in The Hague, the seat of government. Three honorary consulates support Finnish citizens in other parts of the Netherlands.

Consular services

What you can usually arrange here:

  • Finnish passports and emergency travel documents
  • Certification and legalisation of documents
  • Citizenship and civil register matters
  • Visas for travellers who need one for Finland
  • Help for citizens in difficulty – illness, arrest or loss of documents

Documents checklist

Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official Finnish sources:

Finnish passport or ID card (application abroad)

  • Apply in person at a Finnish embassy, consulate general or career-led consulate (only some honorary consulates can issue passports) – most missions require a booking
  • Make sure your data in the Finnish population register are up to date before applying
  • A passport photo no more than 6 months old (printed photo when applying at a mission)
  • Your old passport or ID card for identification
  • Men aged 23–30: military service documents
  • Collection: some online applications can only be completed and collected in Finland – check before choosing that route

Sources: Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland – applying for a passport or identity card, Embassy of Finland in London – required attachments (finlandabroad.fi) (checked October 2026). Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.

Do I need an appointment?

Walk-in capacity is limited, so check the procedure on the website first.

Closing days

Like most offices in the Netherlands, the embassy closes on public holidays – including Easter Monday, King’s Day and Christmas; the Finnish national day (6 December) usually means a closure too. Many missions also close on their own national and religious holidays – call ahead.

Emergency assistance

For emergencies, the embassy’s number is +31 70 346 97 54. Embassies can issue emergency travel documents, contact relatives and provide lists of lawyers or doctors; they cannot pay bills or act as a lawyer. In the Netherlands, the emergency number is 112; for non-urgent police matters call 0900 8844. Dutch citizens who need help in Finland can contact the Dutch Embassy in Helsinki or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ 24/7 contact centre on +31 247 247 247.
