Who runs the German Embassy?

The ambassador is Thomas Bagger, accredited to Italy on 25 September 2025. The Italian diplomatic list names 43 accredited diplomats for the embassy. Germany also has career consular offices in Milan. Nine honorary consulates support German citizens in other parts of Italy.

Documents checklist

Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official German sources:

German passport (application abroad)

  • Apply at the German mission for your place of residence – some embassies and consulates do not handle passports, so check its website first
  • Personal appearance is required: fingerprints are taken, so postal applications and proxies are not possible
  • Biometric passport photos that meet the official requirements
  • Application form, fee and appointment booking: see the website of the responsible mission
  • Some honorary consuls accept passport applications and forward them for an extra fee

Lost passport – travel document for the return trip

  • The consular section can issue a Reiseausweis als Passersatz (passport substitute) for the return to Germany
  • It is valid for at most one month

Do I need an appointment?

Many consular services require an appointment – check the embassy website first.

Travelling from Italy to Germany

Italian citizens can travel to Germany without a visa; a valid passport or national identity card is enough. Details: Italian travel advice (Viaggiare Sicuri).

Closing days

Like most offices in Italy, the embassy closes on public holidays as well as on the German national day, 3 October. Offices in the city also close on 29 June for the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. If your visit falls close to a holiday, confirm by phone or e-mail.

Emergency assistance

For emergencies, the embassy’s number is +39 06 492131. The embassy can help with lost passports, arrests and serious accidents, but it cannot cover costs or interfere with Italian authorities. The Italian emergency number is 112. Italian citizens who need help in Germany contact the Italian Embassy in Berlin.
