Luis Enrique Chavez Basagoitia heads the embassy as ambassador; the Belgian list gives 1 December 2022 as the date of the presentation of credentials. This is the bilateral embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium; missions to the European Union or NATO in Brussels are separate offices. Peru also has a consulate general in Brussels. Four honorary consulates support Peruvian citizens in other parts of Belgium.
Consular services
Typical consular services include:
- Peruvian passports and emergency travel documents
- Registration of births, marriages and deaths
- Certification and legalisation of documents
- Powers of attorney and notarial acts
- Certificates for pensions abroad
Note: most consular matters for Peruvian citizens in Belgium are handled by the Peruvian Consulate General in Brussels, whose district covers the whole country.
Documents checklist
Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official Peruvian sources:
Peruvian electronic passport (adults, abroad)
- Applications abroad are handled by the Peruvian consulates (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) – check your consulate’s passport page and book an appointment where required
- Your valid DNI in good condition
- Receipt for the consular fee – the equivalent of US$70 (charged in “soles consulares” in local currency)
- If a previous passport was lost or stolen: a sworn declaration
- Old mechanical passports can no longer be renewed – a new electronic passport is issued (valid 10 years for adults)
- In an emergency (lost or stolen passport) the consulate can issue an emergency passport for the return to Peru or to your country of residence
Sources: Government of Peru (gob.pe) – biometric passport for adults abroad, Government of Peru (gob.pe) – electronic passport at Peruvian consulates (checked October 2026). Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.
Do I need an appointment?
Ask in advance whether your service needs a booked slot.
Do Belgian citizens need a visa for Peru?
Belgian citizens do not need a visa for short tourist stays in Peru; a valid passport is required. The Belgian Foreign Ministry keeps the entry rules for Belgians in its travel documents database; check it before booking.
Closing days
Like most offices in Belgium, the embassy closes on public holidays – including Easter Monday, Ascension Day and Whit Monday; Peruvian celebrations on 28 July (national day) usually mean a closure too. If your visit falls close to a holiday, confirm by phone or e-mail.
