About the British Embassy in Brussels

The ambassador is Anne Martha Sherriff, who presented credentials to the King of the Belgians on 3 September 2024. This is the bilateral embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium; missions to the European Union or NATO in Brussels are separate offices. The United Kingdom also has a consulate general in Brussels.

Renewing a British passport from abroad

  • British embassies and consulates do not issue passports – apply online with HM Passport Office on GOV.UK
  • Your old passport, which you send with the application
  • A digital photo
  • A credit or debit card for the fee
  • Any valid passports you hold from another country (the passport or a colour copy of every page)

Emergency travel document

  • For British nationals outside the UK who need to travel within 6 weeks
  • Your passport is lost, stolen, damaged, full or recently expired, or you cannot renew it in time
  • Usually valid for a single or return journey through up to 5 countries
  • Apply online on GOV.UK

Do Belgian citizens need a visa for the United Kingdom?

Belgian citizens do not need a visa for short stays in the United Kingdom, but must obtain an electronic travel authorisation before departure. Details: Belgian Foreign Ministry – travel documents by country.

Closing days

Expect the embassy to be closed on Belgian holidays such as 21 July (National Day), 15 August and 11 November as well as on the British national day, 13 June. Check before visiting in the weeks around Christmas, Easter and in July/August.

Emergency assistance

In an emergency, British citizens should call the embassy on +32 2 287 82 11. The embassy can help with lost passports, arrests and serious accidents, but it cannot cover costs or interfere with Belgian authorities. The Belgian emergency number is 112 (police: 101).
