What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Serbia and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Serbian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
Closing days
Slovakia’s days off are New Year’s Day and the Day of the Establishment of the Slovak Republic (1 January), Epiphany (6 January), Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day (1 May), Victory over Fascism Day (8 May), St Cyril and St Methodius Day (5 July), the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (29 August), Our Lady of Seven Sorrows (15 September), All Saints’ Day (1 November) and 24, 25 and 26 December. Under the 2025 amendment, 1 September, 28 October and 17 November remain state holidays but are working days, and in 2026 also 8 May and 15 September are working days. A holiday that falls on a weekend is not moved. In 2027, Good Friday falls on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March. The honorary consulate may also close on Serbia’s national day (15 February).
