About the Albanian Embassy in Vienna

The current head of mission is Ambassador Fatmir Velaj, in office since May 2024. According to the Austrian diplomatic list, the embassy has 5 diplomatic staff. Vienna is also a UN headquarters city, and Albania maintains a permanent mission to the OSCE and the United Nations and other international organisations in Vienna. Consular requests belong to the embassy, not to that mission.

Which Albanian office is responsible for me?

The consular section in Vienna is responsible for Albanian citizens in all of Austria. Three honorary consulates (Graz, Linz and Wiener Neustadt) can help with information and some formalities, but passports are normally issued by the embassy.

Consular services

The consular section typically handles:

  • Powers of attorney and other notarial acts
  • Certificates for pensions and social security abroad

Fees and current requirements are published on the embassy website (https://www.ambasadat.gov.al/austria).

Documents checklist

Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official Albanian sources:

Albanian passport (application abroad)

  • Apply online through e-Albania, choose the appointment at the embassy or consulate and keep the application number
  • On the appointment day: fingerprints are taken and the fee is paid (often by card only)
  • Bring your old passport or ID card – if lost, declare the loss at the mission or beforehand on e-Albania
  • Children born abroad: first register the birth in the Albanian civil registry (can be started on e-Albania)
  • Processing: about 3–4 weeks after the fingerprints; no expedited procedure
