What can an honorary consul do?

An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Austria and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Austrian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.

Closing days

Under Law No. 03/L-064, Kosovo’s official holidays are New Year (1 and 2 January), Orthodox Christmas (7 January), Independence Day (17 February), Constitution Day (9 April), Catholic and Orthodox Easter, 1 May, Europe Day (9 May), Catholic Christmas (25 December) and the first days of Fitër Bajram and Kurban Bajram; a holiday that falls on a weekend is taken on the next working day. The Ministry of Internal Affairs sets the dates each year – in 2026 Fitër Bajram fell on 20 March and Kurban Bajram on 27 May. The honorary consulate may also close on Austria’s national day (26 October).
