Who runs the Austrian Embassy?
Michael Rendi heads the embassy as ambassador; the Italian list gives 20 November 2025 as the date of accreditation. 13 diplomats are accredited to the embassy, according to the Italian list. Austria also has career consular offices in Milan. Ten honorary consulates support Austrian citizens in other parts of Italy.

Documents checklist
Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official Austrian sources:
Austrian passport (application abroad)
- Book an appointment and apply in person (also infants) – postal applications are not accepted; some honorary consulates also take applications
- Passport application form (Reisepassantrag), downloadable from the embassy website
- Birth certificate and proof of Austrian citizenship (Staatsbürgerschaftsnachweis) or your current Austrian passport/ID
- Proof of residence in Italy and, where applicable, your residence permit
- A recent passport photo meeting the EU/Austrian criteria (taken by a professional photographer)
- Marriage, divorce or name-change documents if relevant; foreign documents with apostille and German translation (English often accepted)

Visa and entry information for Italian citizens
Italian citizens can travel to Austria without a visa; a valid passport or national identity card is enough. Details: Italian travel advice (Viaggiare Sicuri).
Closing days
Like most offices in Italy, the embassy closes on public holidays and on Austria’s national day (26 October). The city’s patron saint’s day (Saints Peter and Paul, 29 June) is a local holiday. If your visit falls close to a holiday, confirm by phone or e-mail.

Embassies can issue emergency travel documents, contact relatives and provide lists of lawyers or doctors; they cannot pay bills or act as a lawyer. The Italian emergency number is 112.
