Documents checklist
What Bulgarian citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official Bulgarian government information:
Bulgarian passport (application abroad)
- Apply in person at a Bulgarian embassy or consulate – signature, photo and fingerprints are taken there (posts without the equipment do not accept applications)
- Your old passport, which is handed in for destruction before the new one is issued
- If lost or stolen: a police document certifying the loss (notify the consular service within 3 days)
- Minors: both parents sign in front of the consular official with the child’s Bulgarian birth certificate (with personal number), or a notarised power of attorney from the absent parent
- Foreign documents need an apostille or legalisation
- Without any valid document: a temporary passport (valid up to 12 months) can be issued

Closing days
Expect the embassy to be closed on Czech public holidays such as Statehood Day (28 September), Independence Day (28 October) and Christmas Eve (24 December). The Bulgarian national day, 3 March, normally means a closure too.
Emergency assistance
In an emergency, Bulgarian citizens should call the embassy on +420 222 211 258. In the Czech Republic, the emergency number is 112 (police 158, ambulance 155). Czech citizens who need help in Bulgaria can contact the Czech Embassy in Sofia; the Czech Foreign Ministry’s travel information lists the responsible mission, and travellers can register their trip in the ministry’s DROZD system.
