Do Ecuadorian citizens need a visa for the United States?
Ecuador is not one of the 42 countries in the US Visa Waiver Program (Department of Homeland Security), so Ecuadorian citizens normally need a US visa before travelling to the United States, also for short visits; visas are issued by US embassies and consulates abroad, not by the Ecuadorian embassy in the United States.
Documents checklist
The most frequent applications and the documents the Ecuadorian authorities ask for:
Ecuadorian ordinary passport (first issue or renewal abroad)
- Book an appointment with the consulate (consular appointment platform of the Foreign Ministry)
- A document proving your identity and Ecuadorian nationality (e.g. cédula)
- Your current ordinary passport, if it is still valid
- If lost: the police report of the loss
- Fee: US$90 (US$45 for senior citizens, free for persons with disabilities); passports are valid 10 years and cannot be extended
- Minors: both parents with their original ID, or a notarised special power of attorney for the absent parent
Sources: Government of Ecuador (gob.ec) – ordinary passport abroad, Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry – ordinary passports (checked October 2026). Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.
