Who runs the French Embassy?

The ambassador is Kareen Rispal, listed by the Spanish Foreign Ministry since 24 February 2025. The Spanish diplomatic list names 31 accredited diplomats and attachés for the embassy. Besides the chancery, the list shows separate offices of the embassy: press office, defence attaché office, economic office and cultural office. France also has career consular offices in Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid and Seville. 17 honorary consulates support French citizens in other parts of Spain.

Documents checklist

Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official French sources:

Passport for adults (application abroad)

  • Apply in person at the embassy or consulate – most posts require an appointment
  • Optional online pre-application (pré-demande) – bring the number or QR code
  • Your identity card, if you have one (valid or expired less than 5 years ago)
  • Identity photo less than 6 months old that meets the official standards
  • Proof of address less than 1 year old
  • Without an ID card: a birth certificate less than 3 months old (unless your birthplace’s civil registry is digitised) and, if needed, proof of French nationality

Do I need an appointment?

Walk-in capacity is limited, so check the procedure on the embassy website first.

Do Spanish citizens need a visa for France?

Spanish citizens can travel to France without a visa; a valid passport or national identity card (DNI) is enough. Details: Spanish travel advice (Recomendaciones de viaje).

Closing days

Expect the embassy to be closed on Spanish national holidays; French celebrations on 14 July (national day) usually mean a closure too. Regional holiday in the Community of Madrid: the Community of Madrid Day (2 May). Around Holy Week and Christmas, call ahead.

Emergency assistance

In an emergency, French citizens should call the embassy on +34 91 423 89 00. Embassies can issue emergency travel documents, contact relatives and provide lists of lawyers or doctors; they cannot pay bills or act as a lawyer. The Spanish emergency number is 112. Spanish citizens who need help in France contact the Spanish Embassy in Paris.
