The embassy and its network in the Netherlands
The ambassador is François Alabrune, who presented credentials to the King of the Netherlands on 19 October 2022. The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government and of international institutions such as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the OPCW, so many embassies in the city also follow their work. France also has a consulate general in Amsterdam. Five honorary consulates support French citizens in other parts of the Netherlands.
Consular services
Requests the consular staff deal with:
- French passports and emergency travel documents
- Registration of births, marriages and deaths
- Citizenship and civil register matters
Depending on where you live, consular matters may also be handled by the consulate general in Amsterdam. The Dutch government does not publish the consular districts – ask the embassy if in doubt.
Documents checklist
What French citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official French government information:
Passport for adults (application abroad)
- Apply in person at the embassy or consulate – most posts require an appointment
- Optional online pre-application (pré-demande) – bring the number or QR code
- Your identity card, if you have one (valid or expired less than 5 years ago)
- Identity photo less than 6 months old that meets the official standards
- Proof of address less than 1 year old
- Without an ID card: a birth certificate less than 3 months old (unless your birthplace’s civil registry is digitised) and, if needed, proof of French nationality

Emergency assistance
For emergencies, the embassy’s number is +31 70 312 58 00. The embassy can help with lost passports, arrests and serious accidents, but it cannot cover costs or interfere with Dutch authorities. In the Netherlands, the emergency number is 112; for non-urgent police matters call 0900 8844. Dutch citizens who need help in France can contact the Dutch Embassy in Paris or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ 24/7 contact centre on +31 247 247 247.
