Who runs the Hungarian Embassy?

According to the Dutch government, Hungary is represented by Ambassador Dániel Miháli Horogszegi Szilagyi (credentials presented 13 March 2024). Unlike in most countries, the embassies in the Netherlands are not in the capital Amsterdam but in The Hague, the seat of government. The Dutch government also lists the Hungarian consulate at the same address – consular matters are handled in the same building. Two honorary consulates support Hungarian citizens in other parts of the Netherlands.

Consular services

Typical consular services include:

  • Hungarian passports and emergency travel documents
  • Registration of births, marriages and deaths
  • Powers of attorney and notarial acts
  • Certificates for pensions abroad
  • Citizenship and civil register matters

Documents checklist

What Hungarian citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official Hungarian government information:

Hungarian passport (application abroad)

  • Apply in person with an appointment – fingerprints and photo are taken at the consulate
  • Proof of Hungarian citizenship: valid ID card or passport, a passport expired within the last year, or a recent citizenship certificate
  • Any previous passport and your Hungarian address card (lakcímkártya), if you have one
  • Without a valid Hungarian document: photo ID such as a foreign passport or driving licence
  • Births, marriages or name changes abroad must first be registered in Hungary
  • Consular fee; the passport is produced in Hungary (usually 3–6 weeks)

Do I need an appointment?

Walk-in capacity is limited, so check the procedure on the website first.

Closing days

The embassy is normally closed on Dutch public holidays; the Hungarian national day (20 August) usually means a closure too. Many missions also close on their own national and religious holidays – call ahead.

Emergency assistance

Hungarian nationals in urgent need of help can reach the embassy on +31 70 222 39 39. The embassy can help with lost passports, arrests and serious accidents, but it cannot cover costs or interfere with Dutch authorities.
