What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Kazakhstan and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Kazakh citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
Closing days
The honorary consulate is normally closed on the public holidays observed in Lithuania – New Year’s Day (1 January), Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania (16 February), Day of Restoration of Independence (11 March), Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, International Workers’ Day (1 May), Mother’s Day (first Sunday in May), Father’s Day (first Sunday in June), St John’s Day / Midsummer (24 June), Statehood Day (6 July), Assumption Day (15 August), All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (1 and 2 November), Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the second day of Christmas (24–26 December). Lithuania does not move holidays that fall on a weekend; Easter follows the Western calendar. It is usually also closed on Kazakhstan’s national day (25 October).
