Location of the Embassy
Before your visit
Consular matters are not handled at the main building but at Opernring 5/7th floor, 1010 Vienna in the 1st district.
- Emergencies outside office hours: +31 247 247 247.
The embassy and its staff
Ambassador Peter Christiaan Potman has headed the embassy since August 2023. The Austrian Foreign Ministry’s diplomatic list names 7 accredited diplomats. This includes a defence attaché. Do not confuse the embassy with the Netherlands’s permanent mission to the OSCE and the United Nations and other international organisations in Vienna: that mission deals with multilateral diplomacy only.
Which Dutch office is responsible for me?
The consular section in Vienna is responsible for Dutch citizens in all of Austria. Four honorary consulates (Graz, Innsbruck, Linz and Salzburg) can help with information and some formalities, but passports are normally issued by the embassy.
Consular services
Services for Dutch citizens and visitors include:
- Dutch passports and emergency travel documents
- Powers of attorney and other notarial acts
- Certificates for pensions and social security abroad
- Citizenship and residence register matters
- Visas for travellers who need one for the Netherlands
Ask the embassy about fees and processing times before you apply – they are not listed by the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
Documents checklist
What Dutch citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official Dutch government information:
Dutch passport or ID card (application abroad)
- Book a separate appointment for each passport or ID card – at a Dutch embassy or consulate-general, or via VFS Global where available (you may also apply in another country)
- Completed application form, a passport photo meeting the Dutch requirements and your printed personal checklist from netherlandsworldwide.nl
- Proof of legal residence in Austria
- All your Dutch and foreign passports and ID cards, including expired ones (originals)
- Everyone applies in person, including children under 18
- For postal return: a prepaid shipping label per application – note that you first have to send in your old document

Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.
Do I need an appointment?
Without an appointment you may be turned away at the door. Contact it by phone or e-mail to book a time.
