About the British Embassy in Madrid
The ambassador is Alexander Wykeham Ellis, listed by the Spanish Foreign Ministry since 8 January 2025. 34 diplomats and attachés are accredited to the embassy, according to the Spanish list. Renewing a British passport from abroad
- British embassies and consulates do not issue passports – apply online with HM Passport Office on GOV.UK
- Your old passport, which you send with the application
- A digital photo
- A credit or debit card for the fee
- Any valid passports you hold from another country (the passport or a colour copy of every page)
Emergency travel document
- For British nationals outside the UK who need to travel within 6 weeks
- Your passport is lost, stolen, damaged, full or recently expired, or you cannot renew it in time
- Usually valid for a single or return journey through up to 5 countries

Do Spanish citizens need a visa for the United Kingdom?
Spanish citizens do not need a visa for short stays in the United Kingdom, but must obtain an electronic travel authorisation before departure. The Spanish Foreign Ministry has no specific travel restrictions for the United Kingdom. Details: Spanish travel advice (Recomendaciones de viaje).
Closing days
The embassy is closed on Spanish public holidays. Regional holiday in the Community of Madrid: the Community of Madrid Day (2 May). Check before visiting around Christmas, Easter (Holy Week) and local fiestas.
