The embassy and its network in Spain

The ambassador is Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, listed by the Spanish Foreign Ministry since 17 January 2024. The Spanish diplomatic list names 24 accredited diplomats and attachés for the embassy. Besides the chancery, the list shows separate offices of the embassy: defence attaché office and cultural office. Italy also has career consular offices in Barcelona, Madrid and Tenerife. 17 honorary consulates support Italian citizens in other parts of Spain.

Documents checklist

What Italian citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official Italian government information:

Italian passport (application abroad)

  • Registration in AIRE (registry of Italians resident abroad), with your current address, at the consulate for your area
  • Book an appointment in the Prenot@mi system (adults and minors aged 12 or over) and apply in person – fingerprints are taken
  • A recent colour photo, 35 × 40 mm, front-facing on a light background, taken within the last six months
  • Your expired or expiring passport as proof of identity
  • Passports are not renewed – a new passport is issued (valid 10 years for adults)
  • Fee: about €116 (e.g. €116.20 at the Consulate General in Paris since 1 December 2025), often payable in local currency

Do I need an appointment?

Many consular services require an appointment – check the embassy website first.

Do Spanish citizens need a visa for Italy?

Spanish citizens can travel to Italy without a visa; a valid passport or national identity card (DNI) is enough. Details: Spanish travel advice (Recomendaciones de viaje).

Closing days

The embassy is closed on Spanish public holidays; Italian celebrations on 2 June (national day) usually mean a closure too. Regional holiday to note: the Community of Madrid Day (2 May). Local holidays of the municipality can bring further closures.

Emergency assistance

For emergencies, the embassy’s number is +34 91 423 33 00. Consular staff can replace lost travel documents and inform family members; they do not provide legal representation or money.
