What can an honorary consul do?
An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by Estonia and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help Estonian citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.

Closing days
The honorary consulate is normally closed on the public holidays observed in Hungary – New Year’s Day (1 January), the 1848 Revolution Memorial Day (15 March), Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, Labour Day (1 May), Whit Sunday and Whit Monday, St Stephen’s Day – the State Foundation Day (20 August), the 1956 Revolution Memorial Day (23 October), All Saints’ Day (1 November) and Christmas (25 and 26 December). Christmas Eve (24 December) is also a day off in 2026. When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the Hungarian government usually turns the Monday or Friday in between into a rest day (in 2026: 2 January and 21 August), so many offices close on those days as well. It is usually also closed on Estonia’s national day (24 February).
