Documents checklist
Prepare these documents before your appointment. The lists are taken from official Finnish sources:
Finnish passport or ID card (application abroad)
- Apply in person at a Finnish embassy, consulate general or career-led consulate (only some honorary consulates can issue passports) – most missions require a booking
- Make sure your data in the Finnish population register are up to date before applying
- A passport photo no more than 6 months old (printed photo when applying at a mission)
- Your old passport or ID card for identification
- Men aged 23–30: military service documents
- Collection: some online applications can only be completed and collected in Finland – check before choosing that route
Sources: Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland – applying for a passport or identity card, Embassy of Finland in London – required attachments (finlandabroad.fi) (checked October 2026). Requirements and fees can change and individual posts may ask for more – confirm the current list with the embassy before your visit.

Christmas Eve (24 December) is also a day off in 2026. When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the Hungarian government usually turns the Monday or Friday in between into a rest day (in 2026: 2 January and 21 August), so many offices close on those days as well. It is usually also closed on Finland’s national day (6 December).
Emergency assistance
In Hungary, call 112 for any emergency; the direct numbers are 104 for an ambulance, 105 for the fire service and 107 for the police. Hungarian citizens who need help in Finland can contact the Embassy of Hungary in Helsinki or the Consular Service of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (24-hour line +36 80 36 80 36).
