What Dutch citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official Dutch government information:
Dutch passport or ID card (application abroad)
- Book a separate appointment for each passport or ID card – at a Dutch embassy or consulate-general, or via VFS Global where available (you may also apply in another country)
- Completed application form, a passport photo meeting the Dutch requirements and your printed personal checklist from netherlandsworldwide.nl
- Proof of legal residence in Italy
- All your Dutch and foreign passports and ID cards, including expired ones (originals)
- Everyone applies in person, including children under 18
- For postal return: a prepaid shipping label per application – note that you first have to send in your old document

Walk-in capacity is limited, so check the procedure on the embassy website first.
Visa and entry information for Italian citizens
Italian citizens can travel to the Netherlands without a visa; a valid passport or national identity card is enough. Details: Italian travel advice (Viaggiare Sicuri).
Closing days
Like most offices in Italy, the embassy closes on public holidays; Dutch celebrations on 27 April (national day) usually mean a closure too. Local holiday: 29 June, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, patron of the city. Many offices work reduced hours in August – call ahead in summer.
Emergency assistance
In an emergency, Dutch citizens should call the embassy on +39 06 32286001. Embassies can issue emergency travel documents, contact relatives and provide lists of lawyers or doctors; they cannot pay bills or act as a lawyer. The Italian emergency number is 112.
