About the honorary consulate in Zagreb

Croatian citizens do not need a visa for short stays in South Africa of up to 90 days, according to the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs; a valid passport is required. See the ministry’s visa overview for South Africa (in Croatian).

Which South African office issues passports and visas?

Applications for South African passports, visas and official certificates are not processed here but by the South African Embassy in Budapest (accredited to Croatia).

Note: South Africa has no resident embassy in Zagreb; its embassy in Budapest is accredited to Croatia.

What can an honorary consul do?

An honorary consul is not a career diplomat but a local resident – often a business person or lawyer – appointed by South Africa and approved by the host country. Depending on the powers granted, the honorary consul can help South African citizens in an emergency (lost passport, accident, arrest), pass on applications and documents to the embassy, and certify signatures or life certificates. Passports and visas are not issued by an honorary consulate; they remain the responsibility of the embassy or a career consulate.
