About the Spanish Embassy in Rome

Miguel Ángel Fernandez-Palacios Martinez heads the embassy as ambassador; the Italian list gives 12 January 2023 as the date of accreditation. 19 diplomats are accredited to the embassy, according to the Italian list. Spain also has career consular offices in Milan, Naples and Rome. 17 honorary consulates support Spanish citizens in other parts of Italy.

Documents checklist

The most frequent applications and the documents the Spanish authorities ask for:

Spanish passport (application abroad)

  • Registration in the consular register (Registro de Matrícula Consular) of the consulate where you live
  • Personal appearance with an appointment – applications cannot be made by post or through agencies
  • Your previous passport, even if expired or damaged
  • Your DNI, if you have one
  • A recent passport photo
  • A literal birth certificate (issued for the passport, less than 6 months old) if you have neither DNI nor passport or both expired more than 3 years ago

Do I need an appointment?

Many consular services require an appointment – check the embassy website first.

Travelling from Italy to Spain

Italian citizens can travel to Spain without a visa; a valid passport or national identity card is enough. Details: Italian travel advice (Viaggiare Sicuri).

Closing days

The embassy is closed on Italian public holidays as well as on the Spanish national day, 12 October. The city’s patron saint’s day (Saints Peter and Paul, 29 June) is a local holiday. Many offices work reduced hours in August – call ahead in summer.

Emergency assistance

For emergencies, the embassy’s number is +39 06 6840401. The embassy can help with lost passports, arrests and serious accidents, but it cannot cover costs or interfere with Italian authorities. The Italian emergency number is 112. Italian citizens who need help in Spain contact the Italian Embassy in Madrid.
