The embassy and its staff
The current head of mission is Ambassador Christian Groenbech Jensen, in office since September 2022. Its accreditation extends beyond Austria to Albania, Slovakia and Kosovo. 7 diplomats are registered with the Austrian Foreign Ministry for this embassy. Its team includes a defence attaché. Separate from the embassy, Denmark keeps a permanent mission to the OSCE and the United Nations and other international organisations in Vienna; those missions do not handle consular matters for the public.
Embassy or honorary consulate?
The consular section in Vienna is responsible for Danish citizens in all of Austria. Three honorary consulates (Graz, Innsbruck and Salzburg) can help with information and some formalities, but passports are normally issued by the embassy.
Consular services
Requests the consular staff deal with:
- Powers of attorney and other notarial acts
- Certificates for pensions and social security abroad
Requirements change from time to time – confirm them before you collect documents.
Documents checklist
What Danish citizens usually need to bring for the most common requests, based on official Danish government information:
Danish passport (application abroad)
- Book an appointment at a Danish embassy (consulates only handle children under 12 and emergency passports) and apply in person – photo, fingerprints and signature are taken
- Signed application form, supporting documents and the passport fee
- You must be registered as a Danish citizen in the CPR system
- Renewal: your current passport; documentation of any name change (it must be registered in the CPR first)
- First passport or last one expired more than 2 years ago: original birth certificate with both parents’ names and any certificate of Danish nationality
- Documents not in Danish or English need an authorised translation

Do I need an appointment?
Public hours are published, so short matters can often be handled without booking. Passport applications may still require an appointment.
