About the Irish Embassy in Berlin
The embassy represents Ireland in Germany. Both are EU members, and Germany is one of Ireland’s largest trading partners. Many German companies have operations in Ireland, and Ireland is a popular destination for German students and tourists.
Ireland has consulates general in Frankfurt am Main and Munich and honorary consuls in Bergisch Gladbach, Hamburg and Stuttgart.

- A valid German identity card or passport; documents must be valid on entry and exit
- For onward travel to Northern Ireland or Great Britain: a passport and a UK electronic travel authorisation (ETA)
- Do not use a document that was once reported lost or stolen, even if it was found again
- Medical cannabis may not be brought into Ireland
Visa information
Travelling from Germany to Ireland
German citizens do not need a visa and can travel with an identity card. Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area, so documents are checked on arrival.
- The identity card is not enough for the United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland. You need a passport and, since 2 April 2025, a UK ETA.
- Irish border police regularly confiscate documents that were once reported lost, even if later found.

Closing days
The embassy is closed on German public holidays in Berlin and on Irish holidays, including St Patrick’s Day on 17 March, St Brigid’s Day in early February and the Irish bank holidays on Mondays in May, June, August and October.
